Does Brown Top Millet grow well in this area (St. Mary's County)? Since Brown Top Millet establishes rapidly and is a warm weather grass, can I plant Brown Top Millet now and then plant cold weather grasses/legumes (Orchard Grass and Alfalfa) for the following spring in the same field?
Brown Top millet will grow well in the Southern Maryland area. It can be planted from the end of May through June. Soil temperature should be 65 degrees F at 1 inch. If you intend to use the grass as a forage, I would recommend you instead plant pearl millet. Pearl millet will yield more than Brown Top, and the seed is more easily obtainable. Brown Top can become a weed if you allow it to go to seed. Another option to consider is to grow the millet this summer, kill it with a herbicide in the late summer/ early fall and plant the orchard grass/alfalfa in September. Fall plantings of cool season grasses generally do better than spring planted stands.
