toxic soil

Asked May 20, 2015, 2:20 PM EDT

I am concerned that soil on my property is contaminated with toxins. Digging through it I found pipes, old tires, and pieces of asphalt. How can I have the soil tested and what must I do to make this happen as soon as possible? Many Thanks

You can easily do a soil test to determine heavy metals and lead.
For lead, click on Soil Testing on the right side of our home page. The first fact sheet, HG110a, is a chart of soil testing labs you can use. The University of Delaware soil test includes lead testing. Most test for heavy metals.

Other than that, if you want to test for different specific element, you'll have to contact labs.

The turnaround time for test results is also in the chart.
There is also a video explaining how to collect your soil sample, plus more help.
