information on calories for foods served

Asked May 20, 2015, 1:26 PM EDT

Would it be possible to list the calories for the items served at breakfast and lunch?
This might be similar to the nutrition information available from fast food establishments.
Children who are trying to avoid excessive weight gain while growing taller are being counseled on portion sizes and calories - and are unable to make proper selection during school hours.

Hi Hanna,

You certainly could do that, but we have found in some studies that some people, Men in particular, use calorie information to "get the most for their $". And it would depend a lot on what age group you are talking about. Since all of the foods in the cafeteria that meet the new guidlines, we would recommend putting all of your marketing efforts (signage, placement on the line, creative names, Lighting) on those items that are lower calorie to helop nudge the kids in that directions.

Here is a link to a few lists of Creative names that can get you started.

Good luck and thanks for all your hard work on behalf of kids in the lunchroom!
