do lilac bushes grow good in clay soil?

Montcalm County Michigan flowering shrubs flowers: annuals and herbaceous perennials

The short answer is no, lilacs like a well drained organic soil and will not grow well in clay soils. The addition of organic matter over time can lessen the low oxygen/drainage affects but it is a slow process. Some plants will grow in clay soil however. Good luck!
