A black snake has recently started enjoying our front porch and seems to have a hole or nest right in front of it. We've repeatedly moved it away from the house (100 feet or more), but it keeps coming back! In addition to just not wanting it there, a brown creeper is nesting in a birdhouse hanging from the porch. How can we make the porch less hospitable for the snake?
We're sorry you have waited so long for your answer. It was just reassigned to us at HGIC. If you ask a question from our HGIC website, the question will come directly to us next time.
You can try placing a temporary fence of hardware cloth (which has very small opening) along the sides of your porch. (Hopefully it does not climb up the steps.)
There are also snake repellents on the market that you could try.
Whatever you do, do not use any kind of sticky board trap or bird netting. Bird netting will entangle the snake and inflict horrible injuries as it struggles to escape.
Since you are not afraid to relocate the snake, you could try taking it on a ride to a park or natural area.
