Weeds, violets

Asked May 7, 2015, 1:37 PM EDT

How can I kill violets in my lawn? Neighbors on both sides of me have large quantities of violets in their yards. Will a pre-emergent weed control help? I try to dig up as many as I can.

Violets are one of the hardest weeds to control due to their bulby type of root system. The also like to grow in shade where grass does not like to grow. http://www.mdturfcouncil.org/admin/uploadfiles/tt-49-broadleaf-weed-control.pdf Keep your lawn thick by fertilizing in the fall. http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG102%20Lawn%20Estab...
If you feel you have to use a chemical to get rid of violets, Speed Zone, T zone, Ortho Chickweed and Oxalis Killer or product containing triclopyr could be used. Preemergent is probably not very effective. vw
