Good Morning! This spring our birch tree is about 80% covered with the dusty white material. When I brush some it off, it flakes off. The part that is covered with dust has not budded out. Last year it was just on the trunk and when we smeared it with our fingers it was reddish and looked a little like blood. Is there anything we can do to save the tree?

I have many questions for you such as the type of birch tree you have, growing situation, conditions and age of the tree. I have attached a link for you to read, it is very complete in growing and caring for birch trees. It seems like your tree may be diseased. If that is the case a good nursery or tree expert may be able to assist you.
