Lizard in North Albany

Asked April 29, 2015, 12:23 PM EDT

Hi, I spotted this (dead, unfortunately) lizard this morning on a road in North Albany. The body is about 1 inch diameter and if the tail was still intact it would be approx 15 inches long. Is this a pet lizard that escaped perhaps or one that is normally found in our area. So interesting!

Though squished the specimen looks most likely to be a sub-species of northern alligator lizard.

Thank you so much! I identified it as an alligator lizard but one of my neighbors came over to investigate me taking the photo and said no way, that it was a gecko. I told him if that was the case, that was the biggest gecko I'd ever seen. :)
