mystery bug

Asked April 28, 2015, 9:01 PM EDT

I found a bright irridescent green bug in my yard and would like to know whether it's a beneficial insect or not. I have it in a jar; it's still alive. Just over a half inch long, 6 legs, 2 antenna, notable front mouth pincers, 3 body sections with the hind one the biggest part. Should I let it go or put it in soapy water? Thanks!

You should let this guy go. The only invasive bug we'd be concerned about is the emerald ash borer, and they are much smaller and seldom seen. It sounds like this could be a green tiger beetle.
