When is the best time to thin hostas? They were planted last summer. I have tried to dig them up but the roots are really tight together and i am afraid i will damage the entire little plant. Many thanks for your help.

The best time to divide hosta is when the new growth is like fingers in the spring or in the fall. It is probably ok to divide them now. Hostas are sturdy plants and can tolerate some damage. http://www2.ca.uky.edu/HLA/Dunwell/HSTPRP.html http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/1239.html
