Pine Trees Loosing Needles

Asked April 26, 2015, 8:40 PM EDT

Ok so we a a few pole pines in the yard and this stuff in the picture is on them. Any branches on it are loosing needles and it is spreading to other trees. Any ideas on what it is and how to get rid of it? It kind of looks cotton like in the picture but it is not if you see it live it is more scale like.

The stuff that you see in the photo are lichens, a harmless growth. http://extension.umd.edu/learn/i%E2%80%99m-lichen-it-peak-season-lichen-peeping This does not explain why your pine is dropping needles. Further examination is necessary. Keep in mind that pines drop their interior needles every spring. http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG54_IPM_Series_Pine...
