I am planning to use newsprint with mulch as a barrier to decrease weeds in my garden this year. We have both raspberries and strawberries in the garden. We are in the Twin cities. Wondering about approximate date to do this(or what to watch for in the garden). I don't want to prevent the plants from spreading, just slow down or stop the weeds! Thank you!

You could do it now if the desirable plants are coming up. It would be good to add some organic mulch on top of the newspaper, as well. If this is a perennial garden you do not have to remove/replace the mulch each year, but you may have to add some. Most mulches take a little nitrogen from the soil as they break down, so you will want to fertilize your plants.

Water well before placing your mulch, and then water at the ground level, not overhead. Overhead watering encourages molds and bacteria. Make sure that your plants are well spaced in order to have maximum ventilation.

You may have to help the strawberries root in the mulched areas by opening a hole so that they can contact the soil.
