Swarming gnats/mosquitoes outside

swarming gnats or mosquitoes are putting a damper on enjoying beautiful evenings on the porch or yard. How can we control them without using harsh chemicals?

Mosquito control can be tricky. The main defense is to control all breeding sites on your property. Standing water is what one species of mosquito in KY needs to complete their life cycle. They can breed in a very small amount of water so due diligence in turning over buckets, garbage can lids, old tires, rain gutters, etc can help.

Landscape rain barrels, bird baths, or ponds can be a breeding site. Mosquito dunks or donuts are often added to these water sources. They contain Bt, a naturally-occurring bacteria that targets larvae.

Adult mosquitoes can be difficult to control. For more information on mosquito control read this publication from UK: http://www2.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef005.asp

If you live near the woods, you are going to have more problems and there's not going to be a way to totally eliminate mosquitoes.

Personally, I am the one mosquitoes like in my family. Whatever body chemistry I have, they prefer. I hate applying insecticide spray on me all the time. But I do try to wear long sleeves if I'm going to be out at dusk. We remove all breeding sites, we keep the grass mowed, etc. I hate spraying insecticide so citronella candles sometimes helps. But not always. Find a combination of measures and stick with those.

Hope this helps.
