creeping weed has taken over lawn

Asked April 19, 2015, 5:08 PM EDT

Hello, A creeping weed has taken over 2/3 of the backyard (~100' X 100') of a house we own. It has also invaded the vegetable garden and a flower gardent. What is the most effective way to kill this invasive weed, and limit damage to other plants? Thank you

Here is a link to common lawn weeds in Maryland; take a look at speedwell: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lawns/lawn-weed-identification
If that's not it, we need a better photo to identify this plant. Can you take a closer picture of the leaves and flower? You could attach them right to this reply.
Another option is to pull some up and take it into your local Frederick Extension office for help. Susan Trice is the Master Gardener Coordinator. 330 Montevue Lane Frederick, MD 21702. Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday Phone: (301) 600-1594

Thank you for your message. Please find attached a better picture of the weed.

This looks like creeping charlie. Any broadleaf weed killer will work, but multiple applications will be necessary. Application of herbicide will be more effective in the fall than application in the spring. If the majority of your lawn area is weeds, the best thing to do would be to apply glyphosate (RoundUp) in August, kill everything and reseed afterwards in the fall. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lawns/lawn-renovation vw
