Do any local retailers sell cucumber trellises? Last summer, my cucumber patch did very poorly. I was told by one of the farmer's market sellers that it was probably due to heavy soil and the wet spring that we had. Assuming that my soil is heavy, what should I add when I have it roto tilled?

A good place to start fixing your soil is by getting it tested first. This will give you recommendations about how much organic material you should add, and will tell you how much, and what kinds of fertilizer to use in growing your vegetables. Here is a link to the University's soil testing lab:

Adding compost to any soil adds organic material and some nutrients as well. Many people are home composting their kitchen scraps and garden and lawn clippings - a savings on trash hauling and buying compost.

Many garden centers, and even some hardware stores sell trellising. You could go on-line to the retailers sites to see if you like what they are offering, or just check around if you go out to buy bedding plants this spring.

I hope this is helpful. Please contact AaE again if you have further questions.
