crab grass

Asked April 14, 2015, 9:19 AM EDT

I want to overseed my lawn this spring because I think that a healthy lawn will prevent crab grass from getting started. With the dry conditions we are having when is the best time to overseed? Do I need to wait to get some moisture?

Thank you

Hello: I contacted a specialist in this area and this is his response:

"It’s not too early to overseed, just be sure to keep the seed moist after sowing. However, whenever you cultivate the soil in the spring to prepare a seedbed, you will also encourage crabgrass establishment. You cannot use preemergence herbicides the same time you plant grass seed but there are effective post emergence crabgrass herbicides such as Drive and Acclaim." Always read and follow all label directions.

Thank you,

Thank you very much for the advice. I appreciate it.
