My holly tree is losing leaves and the branches are spindly. Many leaves have turned brown or are partially brown. It is eight feet tall, next to a wooden fence, and in a shady area during the summer. Is there someone I need to show a branch to for help? Thank you.

Montgomery County Maryland trees and shrubs winter burn

This has been a common occurrence on many evergreens including holly this spring. The cold, drying winds have caused the leaves to loose moisture quicker than roots can supply it, especially those with southern exposure. This condition is called "winter burn" or desiccation. These leaves will turn brown and eventually drop to the ground. This will not harm the tree and will cure itself as soon as new growth appears..
