Hello,
For both of these types of vines, reducing weed growth near the plants is beneficial. Using mulches can be one way of doing so (mechanical or chemical removal are other options). The grape publication discusses using a black plastic sheet to be used to reduce weeds under grapevines. Of course, this is not the only type that can be used, wood or bark chips or straw could be other options. The publication below talks about the use of mulches in gardens. The bottom two give detailed information on growing kiwis and grapes.
