oakleaf hydrangea bark peeling and how to prune it

Asked April 7, 2015, 12:14 PM EDT

My oak leaf hydrangea is about 10 years old and is getting too full for the space. I would like to prune it but not sure exactly how to shape it. Also the bark is peeling, and I don't remember it doing that in the past.

Oakleaf hydrangea flowers on the previous year’s growth. It typically does not require pruning but, if needed, prune in the spring only to remove dead wood. Otherwise prune after flowering.

The peeling bark is normal and no cause for concern.
