Plant ID

Asked April 6, 2015, 1:52 PM EDT

Hi: I noticed this plant in back of my apartment building and am wondering what type of plants it is. It died back considerably during the winter, but it remained green all winter long. It is currently gwoing quite rapidly as the weather has warmed and I'm wondering if it is some type of invasive weed that I will need to get rid of before it takes over. Thanks, James

This is creeping charlie or ground ivy.an aggressive, low-growing perennial of the mint family. It favors shade, moist areas. Although fall is a better time to control it chemically,it can be controlled in the spring when the little blue flowers appear. The long term control would be to correct the conditions that encourage its growth. http://www.mdturfcouncil.org/admin/uploadfiles/tt-49-broadleaf-weed-control.pdf
