Old Fish Emulsion

Asked March 24, 2015, 5:17 PM EDT

In cleaning out my garage I came across a bottle of Fish emulsion organic plant food. About half full. It's a couple of years old and I can't find any expiration date on it. Is it still good? Or can it do any harm to plants if I use it?

If the fish oil has an "off aroma" it means that potentially harmful anaerobic bacteria are present. In any case, the product will be less effective since it has been in a closed container and good bacteria need air. For proper disposal of the fish oil, visit the website of the product manufacturer. If this doesn't work, contact your local Penn State Extension office.
