pruning clematis paniculata, autumn clematis

I planted this vine last year and it quickly took over the trellis. My question is, Should this vine be cut back to the ground each year in the spring?

Annual spring pruning to within 24' from the ground will keep the plant under control as well as increase the number of blooms.
