What caused the branch ends of my Norway spruce to fall off?

Asked March 11, 2015, 4:58 PM EDT

I took a walk in my backyard finally now that the snow is gone and found all these shoots cut off from the branch ends of my Norway spruce. There are like a thousand of these lying under and around the base of my towering Norway spruce trees.

Red squirrels probably nipped the spruce branch tips. When food is scarce, they eat spruce buds, but they cut the twigs to get them. If the trees are healthy, this activity won't damage them in the long run. Learn more here: Red Squirrel Injury to Spruce Trees in Winter
