Milorganite as a deer deterant

Asked March 10, 2015, 9:18 AM EDT

The University of Georgia Extension conducted some research on Milorganite and determined that it was effective repelling deer. Has anyone in Oregon determined if it has the same effect on deer in Oregon?

I am not aware of any trials being or having been conducted in Oregon on this product. Generally, deterrents lose their effectiveness over time because the animals become used to them and don't attach any significance (example, fear or feeling of danger) to the presence of the deterrent. I notice that the manufacturer acknowledges (website) that their product, a fertilizer, has not undergone review or approval for being used as a deterrent, so using it as such is an off-label use.
