slightly lowering PH

I would like to lower the pH of my field I want to grow onions The pH currently is 7.1 Iwhat soil amendment should I use to bring the pH down to 5.7 to 5.8

To lower soil pH, add elemental sulfur. Like lime, sulfur is best added in the fall.
It is more effective to add it to an area before planting.

Acidifying Soil for Crop Production East of the Cascades - According to a table in this publication, the ideal pH for onions is 6.5 to 8.4. So if your pH is 7.1 you don't need to add sulfur.
