Are there harmful effects to the soil if Roundup is used to burn down the weeds in our field? Is it harmful to people nearby? We are considering "burning down" our hay field and planting soybeans.

As long as you follow the label directions there should be no issues. Roundup is a relatively safe herbicide. It is considered a non-selective herbicide, meaning it may injure or kill anything it touches. Just follow the label instructions and you should be fine.
