What kind of small bugs get into houseplant soil? They look like small knats

Dear Gardener,

You are most likely seeing fungus gnats, which live in the soil. The easiest way to control them is to allow the top of the soil to dry out before watering. Make sure there is good drainage at the bottom of the pot, and that the pot is elevated above the drained water (you can use small stones.)
