What kind of onion is this

Asked February 25, 2015, 3:14 PM EST

I have some onions growing that come back every year. They look like a green onion but they are clustered bulbs and they get clusters of onions growing from a stalk among the green tops. No one seems to know what they are. Can you help?

These sound like multiplier (AKA Egyptian or walking onions) or a somewhat related subspecies called the potato onion. They are relatively easy to grow from the bulbs below ground or the bulblets produced on the floral stalk. They store well and II think, have a good flavor. Here are a couple of links that talk about them in more detail: http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/homegardening/scene18b1.html and https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jnqst7-9YfWFovhqjARtcZZVJC0TPzKsow_5mdAwnyA/edit?pli=1

Hope this helps. Call me if you have a question. Chip Bubl
