I have a pasture in the Coburg Hills that is covered in Spring with Camas Lilies. Each year we receive cows for grazing. The farmer who owns the cows states that the Camas are poisonous to the cows. Is he correct?
The blue or purple flowered, Common Camas, Camassia esculenta is not toxic. In fact the bulb has been a staple food in the Native American culture. However, the white flowered, Death Camas, Zigadenus venenosus is highly toxic to animals and people. All parts of Death Camas are poisonous. It is important to identify the types of camas that are growing in your pasture.
