to elimate moss in lawn

Can I sprinkle wood ashes on moss at the base of the Italian prune tree. If I use commercial moss killer, will it harm the Italian prune tree?

Moss control applied according to the label won't hurt the tree. Ash can be used, but be careful and don't pile it up. Here is an article with instructions for ash use from OSU Extension: "Wood ashes can benefit gardens and lawns": http://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/node/1022
One of the basic questions about moss removal is to consider why you are doing it. Are you able to increase the sun to inhibit the moss regrowth? Moss under the tree isn't a problem for the tree, and lawn isn't going to grow well under it anyhow.
