How can I prevent new shoots from exploding from the area where a sizable branch is pruned off. I have old Japanese plums that are putting out dozens of very vigorous shoots from spots where unwanted limbs were removed.

Hello,
This is a common problem in Japanese plums, which typically require more pruning than European plums. Using heading cuts when pruning will help with this problem.
