I am going to build a cold frame to grow vegetables and am unsure about what to use for building materials. Is it safe to use the new versions of pressure treated lumber opposed to the CCA treated lumber that was outlawed in 2003? Is a heavy plastic liner a good idea or does that introduce more contaminants over time? How about synthetic wood( I.e. Recycled plastic). Other suggestions? Is there any data on these materials to guide our decisions? Thanks. Joyce Bailey

The "new" ACQ lumber is safe to use, according to the EPA. (This is on the EPA website.) We do not feel it is unsafe, but if you have qualms, you can use the synthetic wood or untreated wood painted with latex paint (to preserve it.)
