early pruning for roses

Asked January 29, 2015, 6:01 PM EST

Since the weather is so warm and my roses are already leafing out, is it okay to do my February pruning now?

Hi there,

In the Willamette Valley the best time to prune is mid-February to early March. This timing is suggested because generally we will have weather that encourages the plant to start growing, and the risk of frost has diminished. Pruning earlier (before the last frost or foretasted cold weather) may cause the rose grower problems. If you prune early, you may experience dieback and have to re-prune again after better weather arrives.
