Pacific White Shrimp

Asked January 28, 2015, 10:27 AM EST

My ag-science teacher would like for me to a project involving edible shrimp. Can you please give me some information on the shrimp you grew and where you purchased them from? Also, can you give me some tips and pointers on how to start off growing and caring for them?
Thank You,
Adrianna Anderson

Dear Adrianna,
Some of the best know disease free shrimp are being raised in the State of Hawaii. The advantage Hawaii has is its great isolation. Hawaii is the most isolated archipelago in the world. Therefore, once Hawaii was able to get rid of shrimp diseases it become an important international exporter of free disease "parents" shrimp to those who wish to grow them in farms on the Continental US, Asia and the rest of the world. If you wish to read more and also interact with the people who work in this area I'd recommend to join the Shrimp interest group on the AquacultuerHub (http://www.aquaculturehub.org/group/shrimp). Please watch the video on the shrimp farm in Kekaha, Kauai. We also have a list of all the shrimp farms in Hawaii. In addition, if you can, take the online course called the ATOLL (http://videolearning.uhatoll.com/).

Please let me know if you have more questions?
