On my fourth tree that is dying due to unknown reasons. Some of the branches are brown or turning a unhealthy color and then they are dead. I have lost thee SW Pine and one White Pine. In process of losing another, although I am trying to trim it. Also had bottom of Frazier Fir go. Had it cut this year so that at least someone could enjoy it for Christmas.

We really do not have enough information to answer your question. If the plants are not thriving within the first year of planting, it may be a lack of establishment. There could be many reasons such as poor plant material, poor soils, poor drainage, improper planting, drought, etc.
See our website for instructions on planting trees and shrubs and post planting care. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/trees-and-shrubs/planting-process
