English Ivy

I have an English Ivy that has started to climb up my crabapple tree. Should I remove the ivy? Does it in some way act as a parasite on the tree, taking vital nutrients.

It is not a bad idea to cut the ivy where it comes out of the ground at the base of the tree. If ivy grows vertically, it reproduces sexually, ie. it produces berries. Berries get planted by the birds and ivy ends up growing where you do not want it. It does not act as a parasite on the tree, but if the tree is weak, the weight of the ivy can cause it to topple. vw
