Calhan or Elbert county Colorado ?

Asked January 15, 2015, 5:41 PM EST

We are looking at property in Elbert county. Is It possible to do permaculture in this region. Is there water down there ? or has this 14 year draught made it impossible to farm? How do I find out?

Thanks

Dee

Elbert County Colorado

Hi Dee,

I was just assigned your question. Most of the counties on the eastern plains of Colorado, if farmed, are in small grains or corn. For the most part, irrigation is limited. Sugar beets and sunflower as well as a few other crops are grown on dryland (not irrigated). Each property will have unique characteristics, and if irrigation is available, then there are more options available for farming. The link below will take you to a summary of agriculture for the counties of Colorado.

Here is also a link that will take you to precipitation data for the state of Colorado so you can compare Elbert County to other areas.

I hope this helps.
