Is it OK to prune my semi-dwarf apple trees in January? I've got a lot of sprouts going straight up and would like to get rid of them, but if I prune now, will I just encourage them to make more?

Now is a great time to prune your fruit trees. However, you can wait another month or so if you are really worried about frost injury. Please check out this OSU article on pruning your fruit trees for more info: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/prune-fruit-trees-winter
