Safe alternative to copper sulfate

Asked January 6, 2015, 1:17 PM EST

My plumber just cleaned out a blockage in our sewer line. He's told us to apply copper sulfate to the system tonight to keep roots from returning. As an organic gardener, I'm interested in some safe alternatives to toxic copper sulfate. Any suggestions?

I know of nothing organic that is effective in controlling roots in sewer lines. That said, organic gardeners often do use elemental products such as sulfur and copper for disease control, so I would think that copper sulfate is the most effective and safe option you may have. It will need to be used periodically to keep the roots from regrowing into the lines, or the sewer lines will have to be dug up and repaired to eliminate opening that the roots are getting into.
