Cherry trees for SW Wisconsin

Asked January 1, 2015, 2:43 AM EST

I would love to plant 6 different varieties of Cherries in SW Wisconsin. I get conflicting information about raising sweet cherries this far North. Can you recommend three sweet cherries and three sour cherries that will do well as pollinators for each other as well as thrive in Grant County Wisconsin?

Thanks

Hi Ken - thanks for your questions, but I'm sorry to tell you that there are no sweet cherries that have proven hardy in our area. Sweet cherry trees need a longer growing season, and a warmer winter than we have here in the upper Midwest. If you are willing to give it a try, you may be able to achieve some success with a couple of varieties that have been tried in this growing zone.

Here is a publication from the University extension in Wisconsin that may be helpful.
