Poisonous to puppies?

Asked December 11, 2014, 1:47 PM EST

We need to know if the plant in the picture is poisonous to puppies. It has purple flowers and the ones we have are about 18" tall. It has a red stem and the flowers bloom in spring and summer. Supposedly you can plant more with cuttings.

From Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center database:
Neither Ruellia brittonianna (Mexican petunia) the plant in your image - nor any other species of Ruellia appear in any of the following toxic plant databases:

Poisonous Plants of North Carolina

Cornell University Plants Poisonous to Livestock

Toxic Plants of Texas

University of Pennsylvania Poisonous Plants

Canadian Poisonous Plants Information System

ASPCA Toxic and Non-toxic Plant List - Dogs

Its absence from the lists is not an absolute guarantee that R. brittoniana is completely non-toxic; however, its absence from the lists is a good indication that it is harmless.
