Good Morning!

You do not need to cut it down for winter at all unless you just don't like how it looks right now. Ornamental grasses provide visual interest in your landscape and sometimes snow or ice hanging on the grasses can look quite beautiful. Leaving them uncut during the winter can also provide some protection to the crown of the plant which is important if we have an especially harsh winter.

No matter when you decide to cut it back, you can leave about 4-6 inches at the base of the plant. If you decide to wait until spring, the best time to cut it back would be before new growth starts.

Good luck with whatever decision you make!
