i know to apply grub killer in mid to late summer, but is there anything i could add now in the fall that would help me get the upper hand on grubs come summer time? thank you

At this point you need to wait until next growing season. With the colder temperatures the grubs have buried themselves deeper into the soil profile and have stopped feeding. Any application now would have zero effect on the grub population.
