Does dog urine kill plants?

Asked October 26, 2014, 7:08 PM EDT

My neighbor's dog comes and pees on small ornamental plants that I try to grow and I think it kills them, but she doesn't think so. Can dog urine kill plants?

Yes, urine is definitely damaging to plants. A one-time event usually isn't too big a deal, unless the plant is extra tender or with soft, new growth. But repeated events will definitely kill plants. It sounds as if the dog is marking this particular territory for some reason, which could then attract other dogs to mark there as well. So ultimately, if your plants are dying, it would be best for you to find a way to protect them from dogs.
