We are currently inundated with what is either knats or fruit flies. They are not only inside the house, but all over the outside of the windows and sliding glass door. What's going on?? We live on Kent Island on the Chesapeake Bay.
These are probably not fruit flies but some kind of gnat. Swarms of gnats are common when the weather conditions are just right and a slew of them hatch out at the same time, especially when you live near the water.
You do not need to be alarmed. You can hit them with a strong spray with a garden hose to knock down the numbers.
They are probably just getting inside the house when the doors are opened, however if they've been around in the house for some time when they were NOT outside, then you could have fruit flies along with the gnats. Please read over our website's pub on indoor flies: http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/non_HGIC_FS/HG26_fli...
For an easy fruit fly trap, put some rotting fruit in a lidded jar, lay it sideways and let the fruit flies enter. When you have a good number, attach the lid--while the jar remains sideways--then release outdoors.
