Hi... Saw these "holes", "craters", and what seems to be broken "egg". The broken one was "soft" to being poked by stick. Would like to know if they are turtle eggs, snake eggs, or something else. This is in Clarksville MD.

Howard County Maryland

And the answer is....something else. These are a type of fungus (like a mushroom) called a puff ball fungus. They tend to grow on decaying wood below the surface of the ground, and as they dry out they become fragile and papery and when disturbed can emit a puff of blackish, smoke-like cloud of spores. Like all mushrooms, they appear when conditions are just right for their growth.
