Fire ant control in vegetable pots

Asked October 15, 2014, 4:33 PM EDT

Dear Extension,
I need to know how to control fire ants that are getting into my large pots that I have vegetables in. I also have a nest next to my Myer Lemon tree. What can I use to kill these ants but not poison me or my family?
Thanks,

You can use a fire ant bait around the outside of the pots; if you want a naturally-derived active ingredient then try spinosad. Please read and follow all label instructions.
