PRUNING IS IT SAFE THIS LATE IN THE SEASON

Asked October 13, 2014, 1:02 PM EDT

Can we safely prune Pagoda Dogwood at this time of year? How about Black Chokeberry or Viburnum?

It is too late in the year to be pruning. Pruning this late in the season could stimulate new growth which will not be able to harden off before winter and will winter kill. Also, the cuts do not seal off well this time of year. You can start pruning your shrubs late winter/early spring, February, March or early April.
