Foundation stabilizing plants

Asked October 12, 2014, 9:42 AM EDT

Which plants in particular will assist in stabilizing my foundation? What other advice for foundation stabilization do you have? We've had to repair the foundation twice.

Plants with good root systems are a good choice for area away from your foundation to stabilize runoff or hill sides, however they are not a good choice to stabilize soil around your slab foundation of a home. Foundation is affected by changes in moisture and plants can dry out the soil or make problems worse with watering. I would recommend speaking with a structural engineer to perform a survey of your property and make recommendations.

Some plants and shrubs have small root systems that don't have as large impact, however you want to avoid planting large trees such as oaks near a home since those roots will draw water.
