sycamore bark peeling

Asked October 9, 2014, 7:34 PM EDT

My neighbor's sycamore trees are shedding bark. It is thick (1") and wondering what caused this. The foliage looks healthy all the way to the tops.

It is normal for the bark of sycamore trees to flake or peel off. It is a characteristic of trees in that genus (Platanus). There are many theories as to why sycamores shed their bark, but in any case, it is not a concern.
